3 ways we support a lifetime of smiles by preventing and overcoming damaging changes to your family’s oral health
Dr. Ramsin K. Davoud and our team appreciate that no other individual is quite like you. We account for your one-of-a-kind personal characteristics and needs and personalize services and treatments accordingly. However, we also serve the needs of family members of all ages across Turlock, California. Some changes and challenges to oral health commonly arise as our patients age. We have highlighted three of these changes and how to overcome them for the lifelong beauty and health of your smile and self!
1 – Shifting teeth
Minor shifting can occur due to aging and natural changes to the mouth. Significant changes can occur due to teeth not being replaced promptly or untreated conditions like bruxism (chronic teeth grinding). We can restore a healthy, functional bite and the appearance of your smile with a wide range of orthodontic options. It’s also important to note that relapse can occur following orthodontic treatment when teeth shift back into their pre-treatment positions. Wearing a retainer, as advised by Dr. Davoud, can protect the appearance and health of your treated teeth. He also treats the cause of misalignment at its source to prevent further damage; for instance, we can discuss advanced options to replace teeth and protect them from the extreme pressure placed on them from persistent, untreated teeth grinding.
2 – Dry mouth
Known as xerostomia, dry mouth is a risk as we age. It is a known side effect of hundreds of medicines that may be prescribed to manage chronic diseases. It is also a side effect of diabetes, autoimmune disease, Alzheimer’s disease, nerve damage, and numerous other medical conditions. Dr. Davoud and our team need to keep pace with any changes to your health and promptly minimize dry mouth. Xerostomia is a risk factor for numerous oral conditions, including cavities, mouth sores, and yeast infections (thrush). During routine appointments, we will examine your mouth and, as needed, explore rinses and other products to lubricate your mouth or to stimulate the production of saliva – a natural and beneficial cleanser.

3 – Yellow and stained teeth
As we age, the protective covering of our teeth can be worn away. When enamel erosion occurs, the underlying yellow dentin layer of the tooth is exposed. Your teeth may also appear darker and less vibrant due to the cumulative effects of a smoking, coffee, tea, or [insert other staining product here] habit. Depending on your needs, we can select from various cosmetic dentistry services to keep your smile as healthy and youthful as you feel! These services include professional teeth whitening (in-office or from the comfort of home) and porcelain veneers (to cover up stubborn stains). Veneers can also help build up some of the lost enamel to protect the teeth from further damage that requires more extensive restorative dentistry. Veneers are also appropriate for other types of wear and tear that can develop with time; for instance, chips or hairline cracks known as “craze lines.”
We need to stay a step ahead of these and other changes that can occur to your smile. Often, these changes can affect the health of the rest of your body. Consider how your nutrition and digestion can suffer due to the loss of teeth or how the inflammation and bacteria associated with advanced gum disease can travel to other parts of your body and even damage organs like your heart. Maintaining your oral health and overall health requires routine professional visits to the office of Ramsin K. Davoud, DDS.
