You will not find toxic metals, such as dental amalgam fillings, at our office. We are big proponents of zirconium oxide or Zirconia as a metal-free alternative to titanium for implant dentistry.
The beauty of dental implants
Many dentists have marketed dental implants as “biocompatible” because these cylindrical posts are designed to osseointegrate or fuse to the surrounding bone when implanted in the jaw, becoming an artificial tooth root and providing a firm foundation for the new tooth. Since the jawbone continues to get stimulation from the new teeth attached to it, implants also support the long-term health of the bony tissue as an added benefit.
However, a distinction must be made between dental implants made from medical-grade titanium and those made from other materials, such as ceramics. While lightweight yet strong, titanium is still a metal, and negative reactions to the metal have been reported. Patients may discover they are “incompatible” with the implant type of choice when the following complications arise:
- Sticky bacterial plaque accumulates around the implant
- Peri-implantitis inflammation that develops around the implant and is similar to gum disease
- Late-implant failures that lead to the loss of the implant and tooth
The beauty of Zirconia
As a “high-performance ceramic” long used by medical practitioners, Zirconia is not associated with plaque build-up. Ceramics like zirconium oxide also do not corrode the way that metals do. Additionally, the implants used by Dr. Davoud attach optimally to the bone and soft tissues, aiding the healing process and helping to minimize the risks of implant failures.

Gums recede or pull away from the teeth over time. As tissues thin and shrink, more of the tooth is revealed. This process can further reveal the gray-colored titanium for patients with metal implants. Their teeth may no longer look natural. With Zirconia implants, this is not an issue. The material is tooth-colored. So, even as the gumline may change over time, the prosthetic tooth continues to look natural and attractive.
