There are many different causes for dental emergencies and we want our patients to be prepared if one strikes. Knowing how to handle a dental emergency can make a big difference in pain relief and the end results. The following is a list of common dental emergencies and how to respond to them.
Toothache
Toothaches are among the most common dental emergencies and can occur for many reasons. Most commonly, they are due to infection or if the tooth has become abscessed. If there is swelling along with the toothache, an ice pack on the cheek may help. Over the counter pain relievers minimize discomfort.
Soft tissue injuries
The lips, cheeks, and gum are all considered soft tissues. If you experience an injury to the face, these tissues can become injured, resulting in pain, bleeding and/or swelling. For pain relief and to minimize swelling, try applying an ice pack outside of the mouth for about ten minutes. Gauze can be used to stop bleeding.
Chipped tooth
Accidents or sports injuries may cause a tooth to become chipped. For relief from pain and swelling, use an ice pack outside of the mouth.
Knocked out tooth
It is important to call the office immediately for a knocked out tooth because we have the highest chance of saving the tooth within the first hour after the injury occurs. Do not remove anything from the tooth, simply hold it by the crown (not the root) and rinse it gently with water. Place it back in the socket if possible, or in a glass of milk and bring it with you. Gauze may be used to reduce bleeding.
