Proud to be mercury-free AND mercury-safe! How we safely remove toxic “silver” fillings

You likely know amalgam fillings by a different name: “silver” fillings. The truth is, these fillings are made from very little silver. While silver in color, they are primarily made from mercury. This known toxin accounts for around 50% of each filling’s content, by weight, with metals such as silver, copper, and tin accounting for the rest.

Is Removal of Amalgam Fillings Safe in Turlock CA Area

What many people don’t know is the threat that is presented during the filling removal process. Now, this is not to say that you should keep these toxic, unhealthy fillings in your mouth. Dr. Davoud and our team in Turlock, Californiapromote safe filling materials as a true biological dentistry provider. So, we encourage you to remove the mercury from your mouth as soon as possible. But, it is also vital to partner with a dentist who knows how to remove them safely.

As both a “mercury-free” and “mercury-safe” dental office, we do not place amalgam fillings. We only use safe, metal-free options, such as dental composite and ceramics. Additionally, we have invested in the training and equipment to support the safe mercury amalgam removal technique, or “SMART.” This set of protocols was established by the International Academy of Oral Medicine & Toxicology. We abide by their recommendations, which limit exposure to mercury. This toxin is released at high levels during the amalgam filling removal process. As the filling is drilled out, mercury in the amalgam is released as a vapor or as small particles. Patients, our associates, and staff can breathe in or swallow these toxic vapors and particulate matter.

The “conventional” filling removal process also presents threats to the health of our communities and environment. As SMART-certified providers, our office has taken steps to minimize mercury exposure to valued patients, fellow team members, neighbors, and the planet. These steps include:

  • Use of protective garments and coverings
  • Administration of external air or oxygen through a nasal mask
  • Special supplies to prevent the inhalation or swallowing of mercury
  • Techniques to minimize heating the amalgam (mercury discharges increase when the material is heated)
  • Thorough flushing and rinsing with a charcoal slurry
  • Use of sophisticated air filtration
  • Proper installation, application, and maintenance of an amalgam separator
  • Careful adherence to safely handling and disposing of mercury-contaminated supplies and waste (to prevent impacts on our waterways and environment)
